Take an interpretive bus tour to Hermit’s Rest, stopping at several scenic view points along the way. Enjoy numerous canyon views from various vantage points, including Powell Point, Monument Creek Vista, and Pima Point. When you reach Hermit’s Rest you will be overwhelmed by the unique architecture of this one of a kind structure. Commissioned by the Fred Harvey Company and designed by famed architect Mary E.J. Colter in 1914, Hermit’s Rest was skillfully crafted out of native rock and stone in an effort to blend with the natural geological surroundings. It was designed as a rest stop at the end of the West Rim Drive where the horse drawn carriages would drop off their visitors before turning around for the return back to the Village.
Hermit’s Rest is a welcome resting spot for weary hikers, travelers, and history enthusiasts. It is a place where you can find a great snack, great staff, and even a seat by the enormous alcove stone fireplace. Here you will find many delicious snack items, including sandwiches, chips, ice cream, and hot chocolate. But do not leave before sampling one of the freshly baked signature cookies.
